The Benefits of a Simple Daily Routine of Yoga Sun Salutations

Today, I would like to share with you the sun salutations of Prana Vashya Yoga. This is the yoga I learnt in Mysore last year during my second teacher training there. Prana Vashya is a type of yoga that incorporates breath control to your daily yoga practice, hence its name Prana- the life force we breath in and out effortlessly.

In the Prana Vashya Yoga sequence nothing happens without a certain breath being attached to a certain movement and for performing some poses you need to lock your breath after an inhalation and an exhalation. My teacher, and the founder of Prana Vashya Yoga, Vinay Kumar, really encouraged us to breathe deeply and slowly, honouring each movement with a breath. The breath locks will help you expand the capacity of the lungs and will make it easier to breath in general.

Since I started practicing Prana Vashya on a regular basis my practice, and daily life, became more aware and focused on my wellbeing and well-breathing, rather than  how it looked from the outside.

Today I would like to share a short 4 minute video of the beginning of the Prana Vashya series, the sun salutations, so that you also can benefit from the practice. These are to be performed 5 for each leg, always making sure you are following your breath and honoring it while performing the movements.

Sun Salutations are perfect start of your yoga practice. It will heat you up and prepare your body for a session of stretches and strengthening. It will also calm your mind and focus on the task at hand. You need to repeat them 5 times on each side.

Sun Salutations are also the practice of surrender, love and compassion to oneself and are best performed during your favourite time of the day. Giving yourself the time to spend it with you, the world around you and the sun! You are thanking the sun for shining the light on your sorrows, on your hopes and dreams, you are saluting the sun in acknowledgment that it sees you, cares for you and brightens your days. The moment when you place your knees, chest and the forehead down, it is the moment when you salute to the sun, surrender and show with this gesture that you let the universe guide you, protect you and bring what’s best for you. How couldn’t you have sun salutations in your life?
